I was standing in the garden of Gethsemane in Israel with a 35 mm in hand and I was moved by the rich history. There was something about the olive trees that were thousands of years old and I wondered about the secrets and stories those ancient trees might hold. Something in me was moved and it was there I knew I would document stories for the rest of my life.
My humble beginning in photography started right before college graduation. I shadowed free-lance photojournalists on their assignments; we covered everything from comedians to politicians, and I was enamored by this ability to share someone else’s world-view through the lens of a camera. I graduated from Dallas Baptist University with a BA in studio art and concentration in photography in 2006.
Shortly after college, I found myself working for a small communications department as a photojournalist for their publication. My patient mentor took my hunger for this trade and taught me to tell a story with my camera. Moving on from the family I had formed at the communications department, I was picked for an esteemed project photographing birth stories for a marketing program in the Methodist Hospital Systems in the small town of Mansfield, Texas. We created high quality stories for mothers and the first hour of their bond with their child. This special program was one of the most exciting and exhausting times of my life. Being in the delivery room during birth and the sweet moments that followed gave me a fresh perspective of intimacy and the power of a frozen moment. In 2008 when my contract had ended and I had the experience of shooting over 600 birth stories, I opened the doors of Kari Crowe Photography to pursue the same intimacy in shooting wedding stories. My diverse background leads me to photograph in a unique way of catching those simple moments, posing my client’s in a natural way and photographing their story as it unfolds, raw and romantic. When I am not talking about pretty bead covered dresses and beautifully lit ballrooms, I am usually seeking out causes that help the less fortunate, trying new restaurants with my dashing husband, giving attention to my funny dog Jaxon, or training for my next half marathon.
I also freelance for a local food magazine, Ft Worth Foodie because of my great love for collaboration and delicious meals (it’s a great source to learn about the local culture of Ft Worth’s food scene):
